Pet projects
Who: [OU] Red Savarin and you- including new arrivals!
When: August 03 - August 14th
Where: Cloud City and occasionally Curti Center
What: Red's finally convinced the Magitek Knights to retrofit his beloved mecha DAHAK-AZI03 to be combat-capable and he's keen on showing it off... but he's still got one other big item on his agenda: Fixing up his airship. And he's a little short on cash for it.
And that yearning to feel the high-altitude winds in his face once again was about the only thing that could have gotten Red to set up a petting booth.
Warnings/Notes: No content warnings yet.
A. Canis Ex Machina
[It only took him a gruelling four months since his arrival- or three, less the month it took for his battered-yet-beloved mecha to tumble in through the Dream Width- but, after a few favors and finally getting the sign-off from the Magitek Knights, Red was back in the saddle and at the controls of the new and improved DAHAK Mk. II! ...Or was it Mk. III now?
Whatever the case, he was four months late in taking it out for a stroll, and gleefully enjoyed a few mech-mounted strolls through the windswept streets of Cloud City... and, once word came back that the Dream Width was acting up again, he extended his promenade to Curti Center, all too readily slipping back into his old habit of trying to find any job or task to which he could lend the aid of an awesome mech. He'd had this thing sitting slumped over in cargo for far too long-- it was time to get some use out of it again!
Besides, he'd promised a few people he'd show them his mecha. So much the better that he waited until it was up and running again, right?]
B. Ruffled Fur
[But even if he did have his Mecha back, there still remains the teeny-tiny issue of the fact that it was sitting in the cargo bay of an immobile airship with an empty tank and not a fuel pump in Vaikuntha that carried the grade of fuel from back in the Shepherd Republic. It was getting old having to keep the Asmodeus parked and grounded a mile outside Cloud City, and those engine refits wouldn't be cheap.
Being a Blitzball Benchwarmer wasn't speeding up the process as much as he'd have liked. Leviathan's prize helped a little- really, it was almost worth having to see a chunk get bitten out of a fish-deity- but it wasn't enough. Fortunately, Mocha had figured out an idea on how to get some extra dough in a hurry-- something neither his fans nor a good chunk of Vaikuntha would be able to pass up.
Unfortunately, it was a petting booth.
And that's how Red ended up at a cheap wooden stall- looking none too thrilled to be there- set up at a corner of Cloud City (and later, Curtis Center), seated on a small stool with his mecha powered down behind him, yet with a big sign in its metallic grasp proudly proclaming in bold block letters:]
PETTING BOOTH
50 GIL
You know you want to!
[Think of your beloved airship, Red. Do it for the airship.]

[She stops just short of the booth, staring at the sign and weighing those two philosophical points with the consideration that they were due.]

Hi, Makoto. Nice day we're havin'.
B
He almost doesn't see it. But after a moment, his eyes tell his brain what they could not possibly have seen, and his feet reverse just to make sure they aren't correct.
A beat.
A barely-restrained snort of stifled laughter. "My god, you look miserable."
no subject
"It's as fun as it looks," he grumbled. "'least I'm gettin' some money this way."
no subject
There's a pause, as he seems to be making his mind up about something. From inside his sleeve, he withdraws... a twenty-five gil coin, slightly tarnished, and sets it on the counter.
no subject
"...let's not. I don't wanna feel like I'm swindling you out of your starting cash."
Red gave a ruminating murmur under his breath. Somehow, this refusal felt like it was just making things feel more awkward.
"Havin' trouble finding work?"

[ Really, there was just so much to take in here. Red was here, which was great. But so was his mecha, and it looked shiny, which was even greater. And then there was the sign. Petting Booth. Is this really happening? Is the best day of his life really happening right here and now, in another dimension? Apparently. ]
So, Red... [ Hunk strolls over, carrying an incredibly smug grin on his face. ] What's the petting booth for? [ It's an honest question, though. He was a Blitzball player, right? They made great money, so... was this just for fun? ] And is that your mecha back there?
no subject
Ah... I'm tryin' to get some gil together to finish up the repairs on my airship. I'm startin' to get letters from Cloud City sayin' if I don't move it soon they're gonna start stickin' parking tickets to the door.
[Apparently, being a second-string reserve team player doesn't make that much money. But at least it changed the topic away from the 'service' he was providing. And speaking of which--]
Oh! Yeah, I finally got the Magitek Knights to help me get it up and working again! I'm hopin' to give it a combat test soon.
no subject
> Accept Reject
If you needed gil and repairs on your ship, you could've asked. [ His brow furrows- they're friends, Red! ] I'm even an apprentice airship pilot now, so I might even be able to help get stuff up to code! [ And then Hunk takes a moment to proudly put his hands on his hips like some kind of superhero. ]
Did the Magitek Knights charge you to get your mecha working? Or were they cool about it? [ Hunk's not 100% sure if the Yellow Lion counts as Magitek Armor levels of firepower, but... it would be nice if. ]
1/2
You've got a wide-eyed dog looking back at you now, Hunk, sputtering incoherently. His slate slips out from between his fingers and it clatters to the table. For a moment, he just sits there, stunned.
And then... an intensely serious look crosses his face.]
2/2
One final, weighty moment of pause.
And, finally, his arms reach out from his sides, spread wide in the air. Hunk's hour had finally come-- and he'd earned more than a pet for this.
For such generosity, even if Red was going to deny it later, they were going to hug this one out.]
no subject
Oh, neat, it's a hug! Hunk's demeanor skyrockets immediately, and his arms quickly wrap around his caninu pal. Unless it's not supposed to be a hug, but it's a good thing the gourmand is a bit on the strong side because then they can just wing it. That said, while they're still locked in the hug... ]
Seriously, what's this about, Red? Is Hug Day back? I mean, I'm not complaining, but... [ And then if Red deigns to end the hug, Hunk's arms will relent. He's still grinning ear-to-ear, as if he's a slight inkling why his friend reacted as he did.
But then he reaches a hand over and presses the Accept button on Red's slate, just in case. ]

A!
Azusa is just on her way to the airship dock to head back to Sparks Golsaucia when she notices that giant robot just walking around. Of course, this means that she's nowhere near the airship dock, and of course this also means that she's now going to follow this robot. Time for her to get even more lost!
Eventually, Red has to stop and turn or something, and that's when Azusa will yell up to him.]
Um! Hello! Are you by any chance a Gund—[A loud cat meows nearby]—m?
[She's wondered what it would be like to meet one in person, except...]
You're smaller than I imagined, Gund—[someone drops a plate; it shatters]—m-kun.
no subject
[Red scowls and raps the console. There's that weird fuzzy sound coming from the radio again... may as well just give a closer, more personal look to this one. Red leans out from his pilot's seat, and--]
--Oh, Azusa!
[Shoot, this was her first time seeing the mecha, wasn't it?... well, don't mind him if he flashes a toothy gin and gives a quick pat to the side of it.]
Finally got it all fixed up! What'cha think?
no subject
[This is incredible, though. It's a lot like some of the machines she's seen in movies and the like, but she didn't know Red owned one. She steps close enough to touch one of the fingers of the arm, clearly impressed.]
Wolf-kun, did this come all the way from home? It's really big!
no subject
[A quick vent of magic energy escapes the thrusters on the back with an impressive hiss.]
...Of course, Magitek Knights helped me patch it back up again. Never knew you were into this kinda stuff, Azusa!

So it's only natural that he'd stumble upon Red's...petting...booth. He gives the sign a once-over. Twice-over. Then he finally speaks up.)
...Aren't you in the Cloud City Dragons?
no subject
His desire to hide his face is enough to bring Red's head down onto the booth's desk with a loud, painful-sounding thud.]
...yeah, I am.
no subject
Cool.
(Red isn't looking up to see it happen, but he can hear the rattling of coins hitting the counter, no doubt from the shark himself. If he bothers to count it, he'll find a couple thousand gil added to his total.)
no subject
Wh--
[HOLY SMOKES THAT'S A LOT OF GIL. He shoots out from his chair, fur bristled.]
Y-you're carryin' around that much?!
--Wait, that's not all for me, is it?! [Was he going to have to be here all day through forty or fifty pet sessions...?! Or maybe this guy was a bigger fan of his than he'd thought...?]

His walking slows and he squints up, reading the sign. And then behind him to see a giant mech.]
"...Klonoa?"
"Huh? Luta?"
"Can... can I pet him, kupo?"
[The long-eared one nods.]
"Fine by me, but I don't have any money. Sorry."
"Oh..."
[The moogle with the mint green pompom flies up next to Red.]
"Do you accept kupo nuts?"
no subject
"Look, I--"
Wait a minute. The moogle was one thing, but that kid tagging along...
"--wh-- Hey, you! With the really big ears! You're new here, right?"
no subject
"Huh? Yeah, I'm new here. The airship took us in a few days ago."
[He says, moving up to the wooden stall. He's.. a bit short, but he can still reach it!]
no subject
"Yeah? Where'd'ja come from?"
Red's own ears were thoroughly pricked and attentive, hoping for some familiar name..
