What: The race for the crystals is on!!

Crystals have fallen out of the Dream Width in a beautiful meteor shower and scattered all over the world! Due to their origins and mysterious properties, the Curti Center is interested in gathering as many as they can for researching purposes. To incentivize the public in helping out, O'aka has donated a few silver coupons to those top few who collect the most crystals. There's also a rumor that the one person (or more if there's a tie) who collects the most, wins something marvelous and mysterious~

The hunt for these crystals have taken storm across Vaikuntha and they're suddenly worth a lot. It's all anyone talks about anymore! The locals have gone crazy with it! If you weren't interested to begin with, surely the madness that is this new fad has sunk its teeth in. Besides, who knows what the crystals can actually do? Are they gifts? Curses? Dust collectors? Only one way to find out.

Well, about that... I've never met him, actually. You see, um...

[Uendo is speaking now, and immediately trips over his words. Geez, this is not going as smoothly as he planned.]

...I was hoping talking about Owen would work as a natural lead-in to what I wanted to tell you, but there's really no way to make it less jarring, huh. [He flounders for a moment, then just... gives up.] Hey, you ever heard of multiple personalities?

[Nailed it.]

[The dots do not connect. Owen...multiple personalities...he's missing something here.]

Yeah. That's when someone wakes up and they got another personality, but they don't remember what happened.

[He's only seen this in horror films, which is not the best way to be introduced to this issue. Multiple personalities...usually one of them is a murderer.]

Wait, so Owen had an alternate personality? [Is that why it was pinned on him?]

That's... not totally wrong, but there's a bit more to it than that...

[Oh boy. Looks like explaining things to Okuyasu is going to take a bit more work than with Sasami.]

I think it would be more accurate to say he is one. Probably. I mean, I guess he could be the original for all I know, but I have enough of an identity crisis on a daily basis as it is so I'm not going to speculate on that.

Whose alternate personality is he?

[Uendo doesn't have one. He would have known if this was a guy named Owen walking around.]

But when I think about it...how can one personality go to jail for murder? What happens to the other one?

Uh. I... think jail would be a package deal, as it were...

['And here I was just saying he's not that short on brains,' Kisegawa grumbles.

Be nice, Kisegawa. Uendo can't really blame Okuyasu. It's not like he'd have that kind of information readily available in his time period, let alone any reason to look into it. But still, Uendo had hoped he'd catch on by now--]

Oh come oooon, what are you guys doing being so roundabout about it? You're making this way too complicated! [Patches has had enough. He stops directly in front of Okuyasu, holding up both hands as he makes eye contact.]

Okay, here's the deal. Dissociative Identity Disorder. Used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder, I think the name was changed after your time 'cause it was kinda misleading but the old one's probably the one you know -- anyway, the name's not important! Point is, we've got it.

[A heavy pause.]

I mean 'we' as in, we living in this head. Not me and you. I've got it, if that makes it easier. Well, technically it's Uendo who's got the diagnosis if we wanna get all official about it, but we're all in here anyway so really it goes for all of us. All four. I'm not Uendo by the way, in case that wasn't clear. Name's Patches, nice to finally meetcha!

...Makes sense. [Dummy, of course they both go to jail; they share the same body.] That must suck.

[Okuyasu follows that explanation. DID. That's what it's call. Uendo has it.

Wait.

He tilts his head.] What?

[This isn't Uendo just being happy? He sure isn't...you know.] So I was talkin' to you this whole time we were walkin'? What happened to Uendo?!

[Is he okay??? Is Patches a good alternate personality??]

Relax, he's fine! He can still hear everything we're saying, don't worry!

And nah, we've switched twice in this conversation already. Uendo was talking to you until a second ago -- that was him being all awkward and fussy. And the one who first showed up here and brought up Owen was Kisegawa. She's listening to this too!

Uh...Hi?

[That's not the same guy? Every time he acted mature, that wasn't him? Okuyasu's head is starting to hurt.]

Wait, then...what?

[Where does he even start with the question?]

Shit, how many of you are there?

Four altogether! But it's just the three of us right now. Owen's a bit of a special case -- he's never awake with the rest of us. He's the only one you haven't met yet!

[Okay, Okuyasu looks confused, but not afraid or dismissive. So far so good...]

Now you see why we lost our marbles when we saw his name on those karuta cards, right? Owen's one of us, but we can't remember anything that happens while he's out and about. And then we wake up to find he was involved in Shisho's murder? It was terrible! We were scared out of our wits!

[Four...]

...Okay, so this is hella weird, because now I got three dudes that are livin' with me and I gotta impress all of 'em? So which one's the one that's mature?!

[Everything he knows about adults is a lie!!!]

Two dudes and a lady! [Patches corrects him cheerfully.] You mean Kisegawa? She's always so grumpy, I guess that makes her the mature one! Hehee!

[A switch between Patches and Kisegawa is always more readily noticeable than either of them switching with Uendo. Kisegawa straightens her posture from Patches' habitual slouch and peers at Okuyasu quizzically.]

But what's this about having to impress us? Aren't we long past that by now?

[This is not what she expected him to get hung up on.]

[He stares at Uendo - no, Kisegawa - for a few seconds. It doesn't look all that much like a different person, just more serious? Uendo was never a serious adult?]

Hey.

[So what is he supposed to do now?]

Uh...so why now?

We've been thinking about telling you for a while now. We just couldn't find the courage.

[Uendo comes back to the front, taking a deep breath. Okuyasu deserves an explanation.]

Back home, we always had to keep our condition secret. Both for our own safety and to protect Shisho's reputation. To a lot of people, we'd be either a walking horror trope or a faker fishing for attention; even if some might have been open-minded about it, we just couldn't risk anyone finding out. So until we got outed during the trial, Shisho and Geiru were the only ones who knew. [He smiles wryly.] And then Owen immediately got named as a suspect for murder. Not the greatest way to come out, that.

And when we came to Vaikuntha... We didn't know what to expect. We didn't know what the people here would think about someone like us, or how they'd react if we told them. So... We thought it would be safer to keep quiet.

[He has to swallow to keep his voice from shaking.]

As for why we're telling you now... It's gotten harder to hide it. It's hard having no one we can be ourselves around, you know? And it's hard for Patches and Kisegawa to live in a world where no one even knows they exist. We have no idea if Owen is okay -- he's been gone all year and we can't reach him on our own. We just--

[He trails off, suddenly not sure how to finish the big dump of feelings he's dropping on Okuyasu.]

We just... don't want to be alone with it anymore, I guess.

[Shit. An actual adult is trusting Okuyasu with a secret? Keicho never told Okuyasu about the Stand users that he created with the Arrow, if he hadn't killed them. Sure, he can be trusted with groceries and running errands, but this is some high-level responsibility. Even Josuke never talked to him about his feelings about his father before Mr. Joestar showed up at Morioh Bay.

He stares at Uendo's collar...is this Uendo? Is it Patches? Is it the lady?] So, okay, it's a secret right? You want me to not tell anyone? 'Cause it sounds like you're not doin' too good.

[Hell if he knows what someone with DID is supposed to do.]

...For now, yes. We'd appreciate that. We're still thinking about letting the others in on it, if only so we don't have to keep up appearances everywhere, but... I don't think I'm ready for that. Not yet. [This conversation alone has been draining enough.] We just felt that you and Sasami-chan at least deserved to be told face to face.

[He pauses, his eyes searching Okuyasu's face.]

Are you... okay with all of this? Even if we didn't tell an outright lie, we haven't exactly been honest with you this past year.

[Over a year and a half, if you count the time loops. It's a long time to think you know a person, only to realize they're not who you thought they were.]

[Judging from his nervous demeanor, Okuyasu isn't that fine. He's been libing with a guy with multiple personalities this whole time, and he never knew.]

So...it's like you're a bunch of people at the same time? Do I have you call you different names? Am I in trouble with any of you? Do you decide when you're Owen or whoever?

[Mostly, he has a lot of questions.]

Pretty much! But you can still call us Uendo if you're not sure who you're talking to. It's technically our shared stage name anyway.

[At least these aren't the worst questions he could be asking.]

If you were in trouble, we would have told you. As for when we switch -- the three of us can usually control when it happens, but not always. Some days are harder than others. It depends a lot on how we're all feeling. Most of the time it just happens on its own and we try not to force it unless we need to.

Owen's different, though. The only way we know for bringing him out is if we consume alcohol. Don't ask me why it happens, I can't explain it. We just know even the smallest drop will make us conk out and wake him up.

[haha he's a lightweight]

Kay...uh...

[His mind is still in the midst of catching up with reality. It doesn't feel real at all. This should be an Earth-shatting revelation, but all he feels is the uneasiness of knowing that there were secret people watching him and judging him separately from Uendo - the actual Uendo identity, not the body.]

[The awkward silence has him worried. Now what?]

Oh, I know! Hi, this is Patches again. Would it help if you knew which one of us was doing what? For example, uh... When we were hanging out at the chocobo stables last January, that was me! And I was there when we first got our housing at Curti Center, too. I made you some tea, remember? That was all pure, 100% Patches!

Yeah. That helps.

[So when Uendo is apparently being nice and fun, that's actually Patches.]

Only you know how to make tea?

No no, we all know how to do that much! I mean, okay, Kisegawa tells me I'm too sloppy, but that's just because she's into tea ceremony stuff so her standards are super picky. No one's ever complained about my special Patches brew, no matter what she says!

Oh, but I've got more agility than her and Uendo combined! I did pretty good over by Hope's Peak, dontcha think? And they didn't believe I could pull it off!

[Frankly, they still can't believe he pulled it off.]

But you all got the same body. You're all strong, right?

[And only one of them knew how to make the tea blend Okuyasu likes? The one with the secrete recipe apparently Patches invented?]

And you...share the same brain...

[Maybe, he thinks, he should stop wondering how DID works and accept it because he'll keep himself up wondering what the hell is happening.]
