Crystals have fallen out of the Dream Width in a beautiful meteor shower and scattered all over the world! Due to their origins and mysterious properties, the Curti Center is interested in gathering as many as they can for researching purposes. To incentivize the public in helping out, O'aka has donated a few silver coupons to those top few who collect the most crystals. There's also a rumor that the one person (or more if there's a tie) who collects the most, wins something marvelous and mysterious~

The hunt for these crystals have taken storm across Vaikuntha and they're suddenly worth a lot. It's all anyone talks about anymore! The locals have gone crazy with it! If you weren't interested to begin with, surely the madness that is this new fad has sunk its teeth in. Besides, who knows what the crystals can actually do? Are they gifts? Curses? Dust collectors? Only one way to find out.

[ The oppressive air is unnerving, sure, but Ena's confidence of the non-existence, or otherwise easy explanation of ghosts lets her keep her composure. Surely if the town was fully populated it wouldn't feel like this.

She doesn't know about her partner for this particular quest though. She glances over her shoulder as she places her hand on the door of the first house, ready to go. ]

I certainly hope we don't run into any ghosts.

[Another day, another supernatural occurrence. But ghosts were still folks in some sort of trouble, and he couldn't deny the call to aid. He was still training to be a Gentleman, after all.]

Considering how this place rolls? Might need a vacuum cleaner for the dangerous ones if they pop up.

[He ain't 'fraid of no ghosts. His girlfriend, on the other hand...]

Right behind ya.

The duo enters into a quiet house. The windows are open to let the breeze (and rain and nature and everything else) into the abandoned home. There are stairs leading to a second floor and doors to the right and left.

The door to the left creaks open with a high whine, opening fully to show stairs descending into darkness.

[He took it all in, and nodded to Ena.]

Probably won't do to split up. Where to, boss?

[ As always, Ena removes her sheathed rapier from its holster and casts Light, illuminating the dark.

Well, she wasn't used to being called boss, but she'll take it. She quickly glances around the house before stepping towards the open door, holding up her rapier to see if it'll light up the darkness. ]

Well, it seems the spirits want us to go this way, so shall we?

[Handy. He gave a nod of appreciation. He's okay with low light, but never at this level.]

Why not? Pissin' 'em off never works out in anybody's favor, but if it gets hairy, I'm throwin' a damn fireball.

[rivieran]

Good. I appreciate the initiative. [ In theory, any apparition that bothered to show itself was either desperate for help or ready to attack them anyway, so it wasn't a bad strategy.

She glances at the structure around them. ] Just don't burn the house down. [ It was abandoned, sure, but they'd probably end up in trouble somehow if that happened.

She turns to the door, squints into the darkness, then takes the first step down. Hopefully the stairs were in good shape... ]

The stairs creak eerily beneath their feet as they descend, no other sound in the darkness aside from a leak somewhere and the constant drip. The darkness seems to swallow them for a moment, Ena's rapier lighting the way enough for them to see their footing until they finally make it down to the cellar.

An open window high up on the wall is the only light filtering in. Like this, they can see the stone floor and dust covered tables. There's a sink against the wall, rusted and the culprit of the drip. There's also a furnace or boiler perhaps off in the corner. A fire is lit within but there's no warmth coming from it.

The door creaks closed again once they make it to the bottom, locking audibly. Dust falls from the ceiling as heavy footsteps walk around on the floor above.

...Hmph.

[Well, that's not good. But aside from the dripping, the boiler fire and no warmth in this room, nothing was out of the ordinary outside of the fact that the lock clicked.

Shit, but there was somebody upstairs. He kept an ear out for them as he went to check the rest of the room, make sure this was all there is, no passages or anything else of note.]

[ Ena lets Kanji go on ahead, turning to look back up at the door as it shuts and locks, intently listening to the footsteps upstairs. Her brows furrow in concern. ]

It didn't seem like there was anyone else in here when we came in. [ She muses absently. ] I sure hope this isn't some sort of trap.

[ She holds up her own light higher to try and illuminate more of the room and looks towards Kanji and the boiler. ] Have you found anything?

The boiler... gurgles, rumbling as if under pressure, before the hatch swings open and fire starts licking up towards the ceiling. There are deafening screams coming from somewhere, almost impossible to tell, and banging coming from the door above. This doesn't look good, needless to say.

Uhhh, the- the boiler is bein' weird... if this keeps up this place is burning down with us in it. Let's bust down the door!

[Yeah, fuck this boiler, time to go!]

[rivieran]

[ Right. If there's anywhere they don't want to be when a fire breaks out, it's right next to the source of it.

When she glances up at the door, she realizes that...she probably won't be able to break it down. She's not very strong. So instead, she strides forward. ]

Go ahead and try to knock that door down. [ Her voice is commanding as she switches her asterisk to Black Mage. The light on her sword vanishes, but who needs it when there's a fire? ] I'll see if I can't keep this in check for now.

[ She sends a torrent of water with Water Mastery at the boiler. Hopefully that'll do the trick... ]

The fire the boiler produces goes out thanks to the water spell. Ena could probably spy the two Grey Crystals inside... right before the fire erupts again, seemingly trying to reach for her.

Meanwhile, the door bursts open before Kanji can reach it, overwhelming darkness on the other side that seems to be producing some awful, grinding noise.

On it! [He hurried to the door. He could smell the water magic building- familiar from his own mastery of it- and was sure she could keep that handled.]

[But it's when the door bursts open that he's not sure of anything anymore. The darkness, the grinding are all too familiar to him after facing off against so many foes both here and back home, but what did it all mean?]

[He ignited a Spellblade (Elemental): Fire to light the path.]

Show yourself, damn it!!

[rivieran]

[ Ena's eyes widens when she sees the crystals. ] I-- [ She's just about to tell him what she found when the fire bursts to life again and there comes that awful grinding noise.

She winces, but also grateful for Kanji's light. She winds up another Water Mastery for another go, hopefully flooding the furnace long enough to keep the fire out. ]

The water overwhelms the boiler again, the fire going out a second time and seeming to be soaked. There might be several seconds before it ignites again since Ena did such a thorough job that time.

The darkness, however, is encroaching. It doesn't like Kanji's blade, though, the grinding halting in favor of piercing wails as it fails to wrap around him.

I said fuck off!

[He menaced with the blade, swinging in a figure eight. He had to drive it back!]

[ Ena is not taking any chances with fire. While the boiler still has water in it, she casts Ice Mastery, hopefully dropping the temperature in it enough to keep it from working for a little while. And hopefully, she can then grab them quick enough to join Kanji in the fight. ]
