Event || Camp Curtisy Retreat
Who: All characters
When: July 17th - 22nd
Where: Nah Nami Reserve
What: Characters go to the campgrounds to do some team building exercises and build CR.
Warnings/Notes: See prompt D for Mognet glitches

A. Arrival
[On the morning of the 17th, Mogaruru directs the outworlders and Curti Center employees who have signed up to the airship headed to the Nah Nami Reserve. Counselors hand out pamphlets with maps, general camp rules, and the week's itinerary. This place loves their pamphlets. Fortunately, most of the rules detail common sense: quiet hours are at 10pm, no smoking or alcohol, no harming the forest wildlife, no setting off fireworks.
After they touch land, the arrivals are free to pick their cabins and set up their rooms before gathering at the mess hall for lunch.]
B. Team Building
[It's not a corporate retreat without ice breakers! On the first day, every splits into groups sharing their names and one interesting fact about themselves. Throughout the day, there's all sorts of get-to-know-each-other events. Maybe Never-Have-I-Ever (alcohol is replaced with juice). A game of Truth or Dare? Trust falls? If it's meant to foster friendships, it's here.
There are also races and obstacle courses for those that want to compete as a team.
Mogaruru oversees the main activities, even leading a workshop in building paper-mache Moogle masks, encouraging everyone to find their passion.]
C. Actual Camping
[There are important life skills to be learned when living in the great outdoors. Hiking, learning about local flora and fauna, and cooking are included in the itinerary. Complaining about the sun and constant reminders about staying hydrated, too.
In the evenings, there's campfires for any type of socializing. Perhaps now is the time to have heart-to-heart chats over roasting marshmallows or swap scary stories about the Camp Lake Ira Killer.]
D. Late Night Hijinks
[After dinner, campgoers are allowed to use Mognet to catch up with news and chat with friends...though considering the glitches that occur during this event, it may prove to be less relaxing considering the glitches that occur in Kupoto's charge.
Things are fine on the 17th. On the 18th, however, messages to and from the Curti Center are delayed by 10 minutes. In an effort to fix this issue, Mognet is down at the Curti Center on the 19th. On the 20th, it's fixed...but all posts are made public. On the 21st, this is addressed, but now every subject line begins with "!Kupo".
Someone is going to have a stern talking-to when Mogaruru returns.
But that's fine. Campers are free tosneak travel outside in a group for totally legal activities. After all, no one would sneak booze or fireworks or play pranks on the other cabins, would they?
At least, if they don't get caught. Otherwise, it's cleanup duty for the rest of the trip.]
E. The Great Outdoors
[The Nah Nami Reserve boasts beautiful forests and a beach. The weather is beautiful. There are no monsters on the reserve...unless one considers the large fish living far from the beach shoreline to be monsters. Or if they are unlucky enough run into one of the larger animals in the forests. Fighting back can be overlooked as long as they don't grievously injure their opponent, ideally escaping without harm to either party. These are protect species, after all. It shouldn't be a problem if they are with Camp Curtisy counselors, but chances are there are some hiking groups that decided to explore the entire island on their own.
The beach includes a long stretch of sand, rock outcrops with tidal pools, and a net for volleyball. Some counselors have "TEAM LAVODE" shirts left from last month's Blitzball tournament, especially the Hypello lifeguards.]
F. Lessons Learned
[Now's the time for the campers to shine. Counselors lead workshops on arts, crafts, survival skills, and languages, but slots are open for all participants to lead a class of their choosing. Want to teach the history of your homeworld? Have any other skills you wish you share? This is your chance to show off what you know!]

Makoto Niijima | OTA
[Makoto is all about building cooperation and helping people work together! To that end she's signed up for the obstacle course competition. When Makoto signs up the task seems to be a three-legged race. This particular version tied both an arm at the wrist and a leg and demanded that they jump over four thigh-high hurdles, clime up a hill, go around a flag, and run a track of muddied ground. Towels were provided for the pairs that accidentally fell in.]
[Makoto looked over to her partner as her arms and legs were being bound with a soft band.] Okay, don't worry about the first part. Try to focus on getting a rhythm. Once we figure that out the rest should be easy.
Are you ready?
B. Actual Camping
[Sometimes you just want to go on the trail by yourself, and the trails around the Nah Nami Reserve provide a lot of unique flora and beautiful rolling falls. Unfortunately, there are several forks on this particular path and by the time Makoto realized this fact the sun was all but dipped under the tree canopy. While Makoto would normally have a pretty level head she was also reminded of the ghost story last night of Gnarl-faced Snarberry -- a particularly nasty monster that came out at night to snatch away campers lost on the trails.]
[Makoto could feel her heart drop as the stones turn from a glowing tan and started to pick up blue hues. As she turns a corner she heard a sound that made her start.]
H-Hello? Wh-Who's there?
C. Lessons Learned
[Though she may be somewhat aloof, the fact is that Makoto does care about everyone's well being. So when she is given the opportunity to teach something she knew there was one thing that came to mind.]
Hello everyone, my name is Makoto Niijima and I want to take a moment to each you some basic self-defense. Particularly self defense against a humanoid target.
Now, I know not all of you have the Monk asterisk, but that's okay. There are still some basic moves that will help you subdue a target. When confronted with an enemy that seeks to do you harm, the first thing to realize is that they want to hurt you. Don't be afraid to hold back. They probably won't do the same for you.
Next, identify your opponents weaknesses. Soft targets are usually best. The six most likely targets are the nose, eyes, throat, stomach, groin, and feet. Remember, the goal of self-defense is to incapacitate your target enough that you can get away and go to a group that can protect you from your assailant.
Lastly, there are three basic moves that anyone can use. The first is an open palm strike. This is a good move to use because a fist, while effective, can also cause you a lot of harm. Next is a knee kick. Don't underestimate how much muscle you have in your legs. A strong blow to a weakness may be all that you need. Last is a foot stomp. Put all of your weight into your opponent's foot and you may be able to hinder them enough to make an escape.
Any questions?
C
Makoto? Bookish, mild, straight-and-narrow Makoto? Talking about open palm strikes and bodily weak points and no-Monk-required hand-to-hand combat? This didn't sound like the sort of thing she'd have picked up from her asterisk.
By the time the prompt came, he blurted out his question without another thought.]
Where did you learn all this?
no subject
My father. He was a police officer and we were two young women living in a big city.
He wanted to make sure we could take care of ourselves if we were ever approached by somebody with less than noble intentions.
[Well, she learned the attacks from him. Striking the vital parts? That was her own research.]
no subject
[Well. That answer went to a bit darker of a place than he was hoping it would. He'd carefully redirect the conversation's trajectory.]
So that's why you went for Monk. Have ya had a chance to use it yet?
no subject
Yes. I've had some hand to hand training and the opportunity to use what I know seemed the best way to defend myself.
And I did. Do you remember trouble we had with Chocoboeaters? I was involved with that with Tidus and her majesty Nanamo.
They did quite well.
no subject
[He tried not to think too hard about the Chocobo Eaters, though. He almost singed his fur off on that one-- not an impressive first try.]
And what about you? C'mon, it's your first big adventure here and you're just givin' yourself a cameo in your own story!
no subject
Well, I'm not really one that likes to talk about my accomplishments. Where I am from its viewed as pretty impolite. But if I may speak for myself I performed well. We did not suffer significant injury and were able to protect the chocobo in the end.
no subject
[Red actually seems almost antsy. Though, really, it's for her sake-- this bookworm needed a little thrill in her life!!]
C'mon! Can't you tell me about some jump-kick or... wave fist or somethin'?!
no subject
W-Well...
[She draws into herself and considers Red's words.]
Kicks can be effective... but by the rules of this world I don't think that telling you about those skills would be useful if you don't have the Monk asterisk...
Perhaps you should consider a visit with them if you want to make sure your hand to hand combat is more effective?
no subject
Do I haf'ta take you out monster hunting just to give you somethin' to TALK about??
no subject
...do you think I'm boring, Red-san?
no subject
[What's he even supposed to say? He DOESN'T think she's boring, but...]
... for all you talk about the adventures people go on, it's like you don't get that you're the star of your own, y'know?
no subject
Red-san, not everybody needs to be a star and bask in the adulation of thousands.
I have my own victories and I have things I want to achieve. I just tend to keep them close to my chest. I don't mind giving up a leadership or star role so long as we achieve what we set out to do.
Does that make sense?
no subject
But I still gotta take you out monster hunting sometime. I wouldn't mind seein' what you're made of out there.
[Plus, hey, it'd get her out of the house, right?]
actual camping
( ren is quick to reveal himself, hands up. sneaking up on makoto was rarely a good idea, and even worse would be if she had been spooked by something... namely some of the campfire stories that others had shared.
as he steps a little closer the twilight lights him up a little more, with an apologetic smile. ) Did I scare you?
