It kept Euphy safe. Grey, she knows privately. Grey kept her honest, allowed her to remain herself. Grey is the colour of this conversation. It is the tone of her voice. She gives him room to speak. She holds herself back from openly condemning him even as he accuses her. She refuses his bait. Grey.]

I would ask you the same question.

[He is the one who made the approach. He is the one creating constant distance yet remaining put, continuing to engage her in conversation. His purpose is less clear than hers.]
