Vimes puffed on his cigar, held it for a moment, and exhaled. "You know, a few years back, my officers pitched in to get me a pocket watch. Beautiful thing it was, very well made, all with the finest clockwork." That was probably an odd way to reply, but there was a point to it, and he carried on.

"It'll keep going forever, clockwork, if you remember to wind it up now and then. But the funny thing about it- if you wind it up too tight, the spring breaks, and all that pent-up tension gets released. Usually right into the hand of whoever was winding it." His tone isn't accusatory in the slightest. He's being quite mild, in fact.

"Just a bit of advice, from one copper to another."

A splendid gift to give to a busy man. Minimus appreciated the regaling of the tale of careful timekeeping measures. "We Cybertronians have chronometers installed in our frames against which our functions are measured for optimal performance. We don't have much need for an external watch."

Metaphors: never obvious, never completely relevant.

And then Vimes' train of thought came to a screeching halt. A cow had been struck, people had been injured, and, as was the way of these things, a single, flaming wheel was now careening across the countryside, where it would eventually embed itself in a farmhouse, and leave many people wondering where on earth it had come from.

"...Er," he managed, "I was being metaphorical, actually. In this instance the watch'd be you, and the spring is, er." Where had he been going with that, anyway? "The point is, Minimus, that if you keep going without a break you'll snap."

Minimus would have to see to this devastated community if it had existed. Trains should not be allowed to run off the track when braking.

He saw to this issue by frowning more deeply. "I can manage my own time. I am not so rigid in my scheduling that I don't allot a portion of my day to non-work items." That was why he had a breakdown in the first place and lead the crew to Tyrest. Some...fun...was allowable.
