Upon a Starry Night
Who: Azusa Miura and the Heroes of Light
When: December 31st to January 1st
Where: Tark Varentain
What: Dear Heroes of Light, I have arranged a party for you. Yours truly, Azusa.
Warnings/Notes: None
'Twere the days before New Year’s, when all through the land,
None were busier than Azusa, planning her party so grand;
Snowy decorations everywhere, her tree stood by the chimney with care,
In hopes that the Heroes of Light might, for a while, forget their worries there.
In the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, Azusa is still mum on exactly where in Tark Varentain the party she promised them would be held. It’s not until the morning of that an address finally reaches everyone’s iMog slates. When they follow it, they don’t find an inn or a party center—they find a noble’s manse overlooking the snowy wilderness on one side and the fine city on the other. As Azusa welcome characters inside, she’s quick to explain.
“It used to be the summer home of a businessman I met once in Sen Riqeaux. He’d love to return someday, but he’s letting me use it. Isn’t that lovely?”
With a swish of her evening cape, she leads everyone inside. The entire house is lovely, modern despite its location. It’s clear that a lot of money went into developing the place. From the large dining room to the spacious fire place, there’s more than enough room to spread out and mingle. There’s a game room as well, with ornate chess boards and billiards and more.
Between the dining room and the chimney, there’s a large white tree. Azusa instructs everyone to leave their gifts for the secret santa there, and provides them with tags for them to label their gifts with. From there, she shows everyone the kitchen and the food she’s made. There’s a lot of holiday in the catering her Moogle provided. Cookies, hot cocoas and coffees, roasted and baked meats, fudge, fresh salads, fruit, festive alcohol, ciders. If it’s been at a Christmas dinner in Japan, America, or at a Starlight dinner in Vaikuntha, there’s probably at least a little of it to be found.
Later in the evening, Azusa reveals one of the activities is a scavenger hunt. She provides a list of five items that can be found in town and promises the first team of three to bring all five back will win a reward. The five items are:
-a selfie with a smiling citizen of Tark Varentein
-a picture of a snowman you made yourself (must be as tall as a person and have a face, she clarifies)
-a bullet from the gunslinger’s guild or a throwing weapon from the ninja guild
-picture of Starlight decorations that haven’t been put away
-an icicle (better be careful bringing it back!)
As the evening goes on, there will be some games she initiates. Everyone can gather in the living room for some 'never have I ever'. Once it becomes 11PM, she’ll start passing out paper so everyone can write down their new year’s resolution. If they decide to go off and think about it on their own, they should be careful. There’s still mistletoe and mistlefoe hanging about. It might be your character’s last chance to enjoy them.
You might notice some familiar faces at the party as well. Claire is seated by the bar, enjoying some snacks and looking exhausted. Kupoto accidentally eats some spicy jalapeno poppers and eventually starts to mess around as he drinks more. Biggs and Wedge can be spotted moving from room to room, sitting in a windowsill here or beneath the stairs there, encouraging other guests to mingle and make good use of the space. They’re talking about some space-y topics, too, sometimes stars but also sometimes wars. Jessie can be found sitting somewhere not crowded and playing games on her iMog. She's not interested in the holiday music coming from the various speakers.
As it nears midnight, her voice rings out. “Everyone, please come to the deck for a special surprise while we welcome the New Year together~.” She will hunt you down and drag you there if she has to. There’s a good reason for it. Why did Azusa pick Tark Varentein? Why did she pick somewhere high and cold, where you have to use your coat and hold a thermos of hot beverage. The answer will be revealed shortly...
And when morning comes, there’s breakfast as well. Whether people slept on couches, stayed up all night, or used some of the rooms available, it’s time to greet the morning together. Snow still falls lightly outside when light peeks in through the many, many windows of the estate. After a few more hours, Wendy and some Moogle acquaintances start to clean up, letting everyone go home, hopefully in good spirits, ready for the year to follow.

There was beer as an option, but once a year or so ago out of curiosity was plenty.
"I'll take the energy spears, honestly. Means I can fight back. Instead it was always me just minding my own business lookin' the way I do, and then I hear 'What're you doin'? Where are you goin'?' And cookin' up any excuse they could." He ruffled his hair, tried not to become agitated.
He paused. Oh. He'd been skiing. He took a drink, but couldn't help smiling a bit. That was a really fun trip.
No drink for murder. ...Wait. He didn't say murder. He said 'never wanted to kill anyone'.
Briefly, Kanji saw that hospital room, and Namatame crouched on the floor, hands on his head.
"..."
Kanji drank.
no subject
Frisk taking a drink however is a surprise, and her eyebrows raise accordingly, but she doesn't say anything. Still, it's shocking to see...sad, too. But they probably had their reasons. It's not her place to butt in on that.
no subject
Still... there was no hesitation after the mental processes and she drank.
It was a low point for her at least?
no subject
And Papyrus's next 'I Never' just had her unashamedly finishing her current glass, but eight eyes will fix themselves on the skeleton.

He wasn't thinking. Partly because he's just a little drunk. Partly because it didn't occur to him that so many people would feel that way. Even Frisk? "BUT! BUT!!! I'M NOT JUDGING! ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS WANTS TO KILL MY OTHER BEST FRIEND!"
no subject
...Fuck it.
He reached out and put an arm around Naoto.
"Don't worry about it. Let's move on."
no subject
... That's probably not hard. If anyone had noticed this whole time, he only drank two times: when Corrin mentioned singing in front of someone (Spellbinder being one reason) and Papyrus saying he didn't have hair.
Papyrus... though, Adrien only stares and doesn't drink. Time to break... awkward. "Never have I ever... played Truth or Dare."
He might've missed doing that at the Camping Retreat thanks to a small cat, but details not to be mentioned.

no subject
She does not drink.
"Is that some sort of card game? Because I'm getting into Triple Triad in a big way and if the rules are similar..."
no subject
If Truth, I ask a question and you gotta answer it. If Dare, I give ya somethin' you have to do. You do it, then you get to pick somebody and ask 'Truth or Dare'."
He paused, frowned. "Does King's Game count? I mean, it's got that same kinda rule set."
no subject
But ooh, King's Game? He's grinning now. "BUT TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS REGAL GAME OF KINGS!!! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AM DYING TO KNOW MORE!" He paused, realizing, oh, there was. No new challenge. Uh. "OH, AND... NEVER HAVE I EVER HATED PUZZLES!!!"
no subject
Did it still count if he followed through with it?
He took another swig after truth or dare, but paused at the bit about puzzles. He honestly liked puzzles, but...
"Does junior jumble count?" He asked.
no subject
She doesn't mean to damper that excitement, but she'd rather avoid adding one game with enough people drinking with another drinking game on top of it. Besides that, not going to think about why he'd admit to almost skinny dipping as a dare... bone dipping? However that worked.
Meanwhile, after taking another drink for hating puzzles, she looked over at the man currently drinking root beer with two of her eyes. "Yes, that counts."
no subject
"I like the riddles and stuff, though, even if they're hard as balls." So does he hate them or not? Does he do a half-drink? Is that a thing? Maybe a sip.
"Okay... never have I ever gotten higher than a 'C' on my tests." HIS GRADES WERE CLIMBING, but drink up, nerds!
no subject
But Kanji, Kanji was getting the Look™ for his statement. His grades were climbing, but that was a low blow considering she hadn't scored a C in anything before. She would get him back for this.
no subject
But, oh, if Kanji didn't like puzzles... goodness, hopefully that part of his gift wasn't a problem! He tried not to make it too many pieces, at least.
Ah, but the test statement gets him to take another sip. "WELL, I'VE NEVER GOTTEN A NASTY SUNBURN! ...THAT'S NOT CHEATING, RIGHT? I'M SURE THAT WITH THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SUNSCREEN HUMANS CAN PREVENT THAT SORT OF THING."
no subject
He thinks. "Never have I ever... Played with fireworks." There, that was nice and neutral.
no subject
"Never have I eveeeeeeeeeeerrrrrr-" she draws the word out as she thinks. It's a funny word, isn't it? With the two e's on either side of the v? N-eve-r. Good word for shouting dramatically, too. NEVERRRRRR!
Oh blast, right, the game! Never has she ever...ever...everrrrrrrrr-
Leo fussing away some attendants during a trip to the Northern Fortress to attend to the little tomato patch he'd set up there to work on during his downtime-
"-rrrrrrrr tended my own GARDEN!" She says triumphantly. She arm-pumps victoriously. "Knew I'd think of something!" After a moment, she tries to compose herself as though she hadn't just celebrated the fact that she'd never gardened before.

There are few things more sad than a royal-type hovering over the porcelain throne, praying for their liver to forgive them and for their gastronomic distress to be over.
As for her never-have-I-ever, well. Let's just say that the only thing resembling a pet he'd ever had was a roomba that he accidentally stepped on.
"Never have I ever..." He thought back to some of the fights he'd seen back in the mountains. "... Transformed into something different or altered my state of consciousness to fight better." There, that should keep things festive.
no subject
Kanji frowned thoughtfully. Transformed? No... well, not fully. But, wait.
"...Damn it, Berserk counts." A drink. But he was startled then, glancing at his glass. He lifted it to his nose and gave it a little sniff. Did someone screw with the soda when he wasn't looking?
He tried to play it off.
"I wanna garden, though. You ever seen all the cute statues people put up to protect their stuff from goblins or whatever?"
no subject
"Never have I ever maintained a simple relationship."
That might be the drinking getting to her, or she just wants to see who in their group still remained relatively normal.
no subject
"I have!" She laughs to Kanji. "There was this little one in my neighbourhood, some kind of goblin-like creature in a brown robe with a lantern and a knife." Admittedly the knife was a bit macabre, but. "The lantern and it's little eyes light up at night. Very cute."
"I don't know much about gardening, but my little brother Leo kept a little tomato patch in the fortress where I grew up." She explains to Kanji. "They've always been his favourite vegetable, but he could get pretty...oh, what's the word, tetchy about anyone else messing with it when he wasn't around. And to be fair, a lot of those tomatoes found their way into dishes that got made by the staff over the years, and he grew some dam-darn good tomatoes. Darn good tomatoes." Of course, using Brynhildr to help grow them was probably cheating, but still.
Darn good tomatoes. Unless they were tomah-toes. Tomato, tomahtoe.
no subject
Damn, it was good to be a ninja.
Now to think of a proper addition. "Never have I ever..." Frisk taps their chin. "Sung karaoke."
no subject
He was definitely slouchier than usual.
"Maaan, karaoke is fun! Only did it a couple times while in the city. I heard Sparks Golsaucia's got some kick-ass karaoke bars."
