There was a world known to some of the current residents of Vaikuntha as Crystallis. There were many people there from all different walks of life and many of them ended up living together. To Selphie, it wasn't really a bad place but just a place with a lot of problems that needed fixing.
Today's tale is the story of five of them who found themselves whisked to the other side of the world during their sleep. They'd gotten their wits about them fairly quickly and set off on finding a way back to the city of Aqures Ixen. The five were housemates with some cheerful, grumpy, sassy and serious types mixed in together. They were an odd group but they got along fairly well.
During their search for a port, the group came across a little boy with spiky hair that was desperately searching for his mother. The two had gotten separated while out in the wild and the boy was very worried about his mother. Being the kind of people that they were, the group had readily agreed to help the boy look for his mother. The leader with purple hair easily decided what positions each of the group would hold in their travels and had settled into a quick search for the mother. The boy was left with Selphie and a dark-haired woman near the rear of the group.
"We're gonna save her and we're gonna patch her up, good as new!" Selphie said in a reassuring tone to the boy despite her own misgivings. Even she knew that things weren't looking very good.
Their advancement eventually brought them to a river where there had been obvious signs of an attack. Before long, the group had found a woman with pink hair in a bloody heap at the river's bank. The group set to work with the leader and the blonde put in the front set to work with Selphie in an attempt to save the woman's life.
"Yuri, do you have any medicinal supplies?" the blonde asked while checking for a pulse, faint as it was.
Selphie was quick to rush to the front of the group and knelt next to the woman in the mud with a grave look on her face. A shabby sword was belted at her waist as the perky brunette quickly brought her hands out in front of her and began to cast a healing spell on the woman.
"Try not to move her too much, Flynn." Selphie ordered as she started concentrating on the spell. "We could make any injuries she has worse and longer to heal up."
The perky brunette knew that the situation was dire and began to mutter a mantra of please be okay... please be okay... because she couldn't bear to see another child orphaned at the expense of a situation that could have been avoided.
The wounds the woman bore on her torso were deep and looked fresh as Flynn placed the woman on her back with her head on his lap. Selphie nodded at Yuri's request to keep the healing magic going as he searched for antiseptic and other supplies.
"I'm on it, Yuri!" Selphie affirmed before becoming hyper-focused and trying to ignore the tremble in her hands.
"C'mon Lady," Selphie pleaded while beginning to curse her own inadequacies. "Nobody's dying today!"
"Can you hear us? What is your name?" Flynn queried as blood continued to soak the front of the pink haired woman's clothing.
Selphie's hands faltered slightly at the sight of so much blood and the wounds were beyond her capabilities as a healer as she heard Yuri shouting at another of their companions to get it together. She was still getting accustomed to using her own mana and it still wasn't enough as the trembling in her hands became more pronounced with each passing second.
"Now's not the time to panic!" Selphie shouted at the group, her own voice tinged with panic. "C'mon lady... what about your son?" Selphie beseeched. "Do you want him to be all alone?!"
Nobody deserved to be without their parents. Nobody needed to wind up in a fate similar to her own as the simple cure spell seemed to have some effect on the woman. Her eyes opened to reveal nearly white eyes save for the pupil as she gasped for air. Her hand instinctively wrapped around Yuri's wrist as a second set of hands began applying pressure to some of the deeper wounds.
"Dear...?" the woman asked in a faint voice.
The second set of hands pressed the wounds tightly as a head of orange hair came into Selphie's view. He sounded desperate as he spoke to the brunette alone. "Keep at it, Selphie."
The woman made a curious noise before her other hand grasped wildly at the air, searching for the other boy.
"Gatta...? Is that you, sweetie?" the woman asked as tears welled in her eyes with the faintest trace of fear. She coughed up blood before she spoke again. "I'm...I'm glad I got to see you two one last time..."
Her breathing was growing heavier and slower with each passing moment and Selphie knew that it was too late. She was going to watch someone die, powerless to do anything about it. Her hands continued to shake as the dying woman continued speaking. Her hand gripped at Yuri's wrist steadfastly as she tried to beckon the orange-haired boy closer.
"Don't cry, my love...and please...live on without me. Survive, and hold onto the hope...that someone will finally come to rescue us from this dying world..."
There were frantic pleas from Yuri to keep living. Don't give up. Your kid was waiting for you. All the while, Selphie's mana gave out and as her hands faltered for the last time. The perky brunette's head dropped to stare at the ground with a deep shame settling into her mind.
"G-guys... I can't keep going..." Selphie stumbled out as her hands fell into her lap with tears of her own standing in her eyes. "Why does it have to end like this again?"
"Who did this to you?!" the orange haired boy demanded as the woman began to breathe her last. She wasn't long for Crystallis in her current state as her hand eventually cupped the orange-haired boy's cheek as she smiled for his sake.
"Don't worry, my love. I wasn't paying attention...It was only the monsters of the forest..." she said slowly before rolling her head to look at Yuri one last time.
"I'm not long for this world, dear. I'm glad I fought for as long as I did, but--"
Suddenly, the woman gasped. It appeared that the woman's death would happen before long as her hands loosened and fell to the earth. She was fearful of her fate and suddenly didn't want to meet her maker.
"...Is this your answer..." she breathed out in finality before becoming still.
